How does Jersey get its food?

Around 95% of Jersey's goods arrive by sea, and the supermarkets run just-in-time with no island warehousing — the island holds roughly 1–3 days of fresh food(States Assembly, WQ.207/2023). Groceries for Waitrose, the Co-op, M&S and Morrisons are consolidated into trailers at Portsmouth and ride the two daily freight sailings run by DFDS, which has held Jersey's ferry contract since 2025: the dedicated freight ship (tagged Freight above) and the Portsmouth ferry, which carries trailers alongside passengers. That's why the fast-ferry cancellations that make headlines rarely touch the shelves, while a quiet freight cancellation does. One missed freight day is normally absorbed; after two, fresh produce, bread and milk start to gap — and restocking takes extra sailings, not just the next boat.
